Difference between JEE-MAINS AND JEE-ADVANCED
JEE-MAINS is the qualifying examination for the admissions in the National Institute of Technologies (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technologies (IIITs), and Central Footwear Institute Technologies (CFITs). It is also a qualifying examination of admission into Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs). Whereas JEE-ADVANCED is solely used for the admission for Indian Institute of Technologies.
Eligibility criteria:
The eligibility criteria for JEE-Mains was 60% in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, but it is relaxed to a pass in the above subjects due to the ongoing covid-19 situations. Any diploma from recognized institutions is also valid for eligibility.
The students who are among the top 2,50,000 in the JEE-MAINS are eligible for the JEE-ADVANCED.
Paper Pattern of JEE-MAINS:
The JEE-MAINS will be of three papers which are used for admissions for Engineering, Architecture and Planning.
PAPER 1:
Paper 1 is used for the admissions into Engineering which includes the subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The mode of the examination is online. It is in three languages viz. English, Hindi and Gujarati. The exam duration is three hours which has the total marks of 300.
PAPER 2:
Paper 2 is used for admission into architecture courses which includes the subjects Aptitude, Mathematics and Drawing. The mode of examination is pen and paper. It is also conducted in English, Hindi and Gujarati. The exam duration is 3 hours which includes the marks of 400.
PAPER 3:
Paper 3 is used for admission into planning courses such as B. Plan. it is conducted in online mode. It is also conducted in all the three languages mentioned above. It is also an examination of 3 hours. It has the total marks of 400.
PAPER PATTERN OF JEE-ADVANCED:
Advanced for Engineering:
THE JEE-ADVANCED consists of two papers which is used for the admission into IITs for a B.Tech degree. Both the papers are conducted in online mode which includes questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for 3 hours. The questions will be in both in English and Hindi. For paper 1 the type of question will be MCQ and for Paper 2 the type of questions will be of Numerical answer type.
Advanced for Architecture (AAT):
The JEE-ADVANCED for Architecture which is called as Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is conducted in offline mode for three hours in English. The main subject Drawing which includes sections such as Freehand drawing, Geometrical Drawing, 3-d perception, Architectural Awareness, Sensitivity, Imagination and Aesthetic.
No. OF ATTEMPTS:
JEE-MAINS:
The JEE-MAINS was previously conducted two times year, so a candidate can appear for a total of six times in three consecutive years, but due to the current situation the JEE-MAINS is planned to be conducted four times a year so a candidate can appear for the exams for a total of twelve times in three consecutive years.
JEE-ADVANCED:
A maximum of two attempts can be made by a candidate in the consecutive years for JEE-ADVANCED.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
The JEE-ADVANCED is more difficult than JEE-MAINS as JEE-MAINS focuses on the topics of the 11th and 12th, whereas the JEE-ADVANCED focuses on both the topics of 11th and 12th and also the problem-solving skills of the candidate. Only the meritorious students will be selected for the JEE-ADVANCED so the question paper will be deep in concepts which make the JEE-ADVANCED harder than JEE-MAINS. But with proper preparation and hard work is easier to crack the exams.
MARKING SCHEME:
JEE-MAINS:
PAPER-1:
For paper-1 the type questions are MCQs. If the correct option is chosen a positive of 4 marks will be awarded. If the option chosen is incorrect then negative of 1 mark will be awarded i.e., a mark will be deducted from the total marks. No marks will be deducted if no choices were chosen. For non MCQ type questions i.e., numerical type question 4 marks will be given for correct answer and 0 for all other cases.
PAPER-2:
For MCQ type questions four marks will be awarded for correct response and a mark will be deducted for incorrect response. No marks will be deducted if no options were selected. For NON-MCQ type questions 4 marks will be given for correct answer. There is no negative marking for these types of questions. For DRAWING type of questions 2 questions will be asked for 100 marks. Each question carries 50 marks.
PAPER-3:

If the option chosen is incorrect then negative of 1 mark will be awarded i.e., a mark will be deducted from the total marks. No marks will be deducted if no choices were chosen. For non MCQ type questions i.e., numerical type question 4 marks will be given for correct answer and 0 for all other cases.
JEE-ADVANCED:
In JEE-ADVANCED the marks are awarded as full marks, partial marks, negative marks and zero marks.
PAPER-1:
For single correct option, if the correct option is selected, 3 marks will be awarded, there are no partial marks for single correct option questions, if no options are chosen the no marks will be deducted. If the option chosen is incorrect then a negative mark will be awarded. For multiple correct option questions, four marks will be awarded if all the correct options are selected, if only three options are chosen in the case where four options are correct the 3 marks will be awarded if 3 or more options are correct but only 2 correct options are selected then 2 marks will be awarded. If 2 or more options are correct but only one correct option is chosen then 1 mark will be awarded. 0 marks will be given if no options are chosen. A deduction of 2 marks will be made in all the other cases. For Numerical value answer type four marks will be awarded if the correct value is entered, 0 I all other cases.
PAPER-2:
For the questions in which one or more answers are correct, 4 marks will be given if all the correct options are chosen, 3 marks will be given if all the four options are correct but only 3 correct options are chosen, 2 marks will be awarded if 3 or more options are correct but only 2 correct options are chosen, only one mark will be given if two or more options are correct but only one option is chosen and it is a correct option. For Single digit integer answer type questions, 3 marks will be given if the correct integer is entered. No marks will be given if no options are chosen. A mark will be deducted in all the other cases.
ARCHITECTURE APTITUDE TEST:
The architecture aptitude test (AAT) is held in pen and paper-based mode. It is conducted by the Joint Admission Board off IIT-JEE. It comprises of only one paper. It is the qualifying examination for the admission into IITs in architecture courses. It consists of three sections namely, Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing Test. The duration of the examination is 3 hours. The medium of question paper will only be in English. The total marks for Mathematics is 120 which consists of 30 questions of MCQ type. The marking scheme is same as the marking scheme of JEE-ADVANCED PAPER-1. 50 questions will be in the aptitude test session which consists of 200 marks. The drawing test consists of two questions which will be evaluated for a total of 70 marks. The students who have cleared JEE-ADVANCED can appear for the AAT.
Let’s see the major differences between the two major examinations JEE-MAINS AND JEE-ADVANCED in a simplified format.
CONCLUSION:
Finally, to conclude, the major difference between JEE-MAINS And JEE-ADVANCED is that the candidate who clears JEE-MAINS can get admitted into the institutions like National Institute of Technologies (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technologies (IIITs), and Central Footwear Institute Technologies (CFITs) and other private universities all over India. Whereas if you have cleared JEE-MAINS and have also cleared JEE-ADVANCED in a top rank you can have an opportunity to get admitted into the IITs.
