Rules and Regulations in IITs
The Rules and Regulations of all the IITs are similar and there is not much difference in the rules among the IITs. Here we can see the similar rules among all the IITs in India.
Admissions:
The admissions in IITs can only be done through single window counselling on the basis of the rank secured in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). One has to clear JEE mains and has to secure a top rank to get admissions into IITs. The counselling for the admission will be conducted based on the rank list provided by the NTA. The choice of the IITs and the Departments can be chosen at the time of counselling. The eligibility of the admissions is completing final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/state board or any other recognized examinations. The total number of attempts for JEE MAINS is two.
After getting admissions into an IIT there rules and regulations one has to follow. Let’s see the rules and regulations below.
Code of conduct:
IIT students assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the University’s function as an educational institution. Individuals are held responsible for their own actions. In addition, organizations are held responsible for the actions of their members. Representative officers of any organization is responsible for the group actions to the degree for which they are being judged.
Every student is required to observe discipline and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the campus and not to indulge in any activity which will tend to bring down the prestige of the Institute. IIT has the right to make a formal judgement on the violations of the Code of Conduct occurring off-campus and on the Internet.
Dishonesty such furnishing false information.
Forgery or alteration of university documents.
Harassment
Intentional obstruction or disruption of teaching.
Physical abuse of any person
Possession, sale, distribution of drugs.
Usage or possession of alcohol.
Usage or possession of explosives or weapons.
Theft or damage to university properties.
Disorderly abusive conduct towards university officials.
Misuse of safety equipment, setting fire, and violation of fire safety policy.
Violations of federal, state or municipal laws on or off campus in a way that adversely affects the functioning of the University.
Sexual misconduct.
If any of the misconduct is found among students the universities have the right to Disciplinary warning, Restitution, fines, suspension of network access, Relocation or suspension or ban from campus housing, suspension and expulsion.
Semester – Autumn, Spring, Summer:
The IITs follow a credit-based semester system. There are two regular semesters in a year. The semester that begins in July is known as the Autumn Semester or Semester 1 and the semester that begins in January is known as the Spring Semester or Semester 2. During the summer vacation, a few courses are offered as part of Summer Term. These courses can be taken by students as per summer term guidelines.
Registration:
The registration must be done for the appearing of the end semester examinations, makeup examinations, mid-semester examinations, project works, and practical examinations from the second semester. The registration form consists of the course name course code and the details of the student. If any student finds himself or herself loaded heavy in any of the semester, he or she may drop the course within three weeks of the commencement of the end semester examinations with valid reasons with approval of the faculty adviser and the Head of the Department. The end semester examination will be conducted for a time period of three hours in each lecture based subject.
Attendance:
The attendance will be taken by every teaching staffs till the last day of the semester. The calculated attendance will be mentioned as VG (i.e.) Very Good if the percentage is greater than or equal to 95 percentage. It is mentioned as G (i.e.) Good if it ranges between 85 % to 94% and it is mentioned as p (i.e.) Poor it is below 85%. A student who secures p that is if the percentage is less than 85%, he or she will not be permitted to appear in the end-semester examination. If it is a core course the student would have to repeat the entire course when it is offered again.
System of tests:
For a lecture-based course, two quiz tests will be held in the case of common courses of first three semesters and for higher semester courses as decided by the class committee. The details of the weightage of marks for these quizzes will be announced to the students, after consultation with the Class Committee. the scheme of evaluation should be informed to the dean of academic courses at the beginning of the semester.
Re-examination of Answer Papers:
In case any student feels that he or she is unfairly treated, he/she can contact the respected teacher within three weeks from the commencement of the semester following the announcement of the results. The student shall have access to his/her answer paper(s) in the end semester examination which may be shown to him/her by the teachers concerned. If the teacher feels that there is some Genuity in the case ,the teacher has the rights to re-examine the case and forward a revised grade, if any, to the Dean of Academic Courses through the Chairman of the Class Committee with justification for the revision, with intimation to the Head of the Department.
Eligibility for award of the Degree:
A student shall be declared to be eligible for award of the B.Tech degree if he/she has
Registered and successfully completed all the core courses and projects.
Successfully acquired the minimum required credits as specified in the curriculum corresponding to the branch of his/ her study within the stipulated time.
Earned the specified credits in all the categories of subjects.
Completed the NCC / NSO / NSS requirements.
Secured a CGPA of 5.0 in passed subjects only.
No dues to the Institute, Hostels, Libraries, NCC / NSS / NSO etc.
No disciplinary action is pending against him / her.
The degree must be recommended by the Senate and approved by the Board of Governors of the Institute.
Hostel Rules and Regulations:
Accommodation:
Hostel facility will be available for all registered students.
Students will not be permitted to stay inside the hostel rooms on vacations.
At the time of admission every student has to submit a written undertaking in the prescribed form, countersigned by his/her parent/guardian, to the extent that he/she would abide by the rules and regulations of the Hostel.
Room Allotment:
At the time of admission into the hostel students should submit the admission form with all the details furnished.
Minimal furniture will be provided.
Allotment of rooms are the sole decision of the hostel administration, which may allot rooms on any basis.
Change of rooms are not entertained unless special situations.
Inmates are requested to give respect the equal rights of their roommates.
Management has the rights to shift a student from one room to another without specifying any reason.
The electronics and the furniture must be handed over to the management in proper condition before vacating.
Visitors:
All visitors will be allowed only up to visitors’ hall.
All visitors including parents have to make entries in the visitors’ book.
The guest rooms will be provided to the visitors if they wanted to stay for a short duration.
Guest room charges should be paid by the student, whose guests are accommodated.
Guest rooms will be allotted on the first come first serve basis.
If any damage is caused to the Hostel property by the guests, compensation as assessed by the Hostel Management shall be recovered from the student.
Use of Appliances:
The use of gadgets or appliances such as electric stove/ heaters/ iron/ refrigerator/ infrared cooker is strictly prohibited.
Use of audio systems which may disturb others is not allowed.
The use of personal TV, VCR, DVD, etc. is strictly prohibited.
When students go out of the rooms, all the electronic appliances must be turned off.
Mess:
All the students are charged for both for accommodation and mess.
The mess will be providing both vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods.
The food items of the week can be found in the notice board every week.
Day scholars are not allowed as guests of mess on a regular basis.
Food will not be served to the rooms under any circumstances.
The students should not enter the kitchen at any cause.
Food should not be taken from dining halls to rooms.
Wasting food is strictly prohibited and it is considered as a social crime.
Suitable fine shall be imposed on students who waste food.
Mess fees should be paid before due date.
Ragging:
Ragging in any form is banned.
Severe punishment including expulsion of hostel and the institute shall be imposed on the student.
Ragging is a cognizable offence.
If subjected to any form of ragging the victim should inform to the authorities immediately.
When the students/inmates committing or abetting the crime of ragging could not be identified, collective punishment on a group or all the inmates may be resorted to as a deterrent measure.
All students who are staying in hostel should sign an anti-ragging form.
If someone is reported for ragging the student can also be taken under police custody under the local laws.
Timings:
Students should be inside the hotel premises between 9.30 PM to 6.00 AM
No student is permitted to stay outside the hostel during the above-mentioned time without proper permission.
if any student wants to go out to the city or town between 6.00 AM and 9.30 PM, excluding the class hours, he/she should submit a filled prescribed form indicating the time of leaving and expected time of arrival.
Students are allowed to go home during the college days with proper permission from the parents.
Code of conduct:
Dress code should be followed modestly inside the hostel premises.
Walls should not be scribbled and notices should not be pasted on walls.
Engaging personal attendants is prohibited.
The cleanliness and the maintenance of the room is the responsibility of the student.
The rooms, common areas and surroundings of the Hostel should be kept clean and hygienic.
In case of any damage caused to the properties the repairing cost would be liable by the student responsible for the damage.
The students are not allowed to move the furniture from its place.
The students are responsible for their belongings.
Hostel management is not responsible for the belongings of the students.
Students must cooperate in carrying out maintenance work and vacate their rooms completely when the Hostel Administration requires the rooms for this purpose. On such occasions, the Management shall provide alternative accommodation.
In the Hostel premises the following acts are strictly prohibited:
Smoking
Consumption of alcohol
Gambling
Consumption of drugs
Intimidation or violence
Willful damage of property
Entering hostel in an intoxicated state
Using abusive languages
Cooking un the room or hostel premises.
Using motor vehicles.
If any of the student is found to be indulged in the above prohibited activities shall be subjected to disciplinary action by hall management as stipulated under the relevant cause after a proper enquiry. If any student feels he or she is treated in an unfairly manner on any matter concerning running of the Hall or its Mess, he/she may approach the Hall Management by writing for help, guidance or any kind of remedy for the grievance. Depending on the complaint nature, further action can be done by the Institute grievance cell if referred by the hall management.
Fines:
Mess fund will be collected from defaulters and will be used for the improvement of the mess services such as food, tables etc.,
Hall fine fund will be collected from hostellers. To upkeep the hostel and the improvement of the hostel these types of funds will be used.
